Abstract:
It has often been reported that a record has been banned by the BBC but it was not until the release of the groundbreaking set, This Record Is Not To Be Broadcast, in 2008 that actual proof was given. The BBC never wanted to publicise its decisions, but using the BBC's files, broadcaster Spencer Leigh compiled a 3CD set which showed not only what had been banned but also why the BBC found the tracks objectionable. This Record Is Not To Be Broadcast was the subject of many media features and received excellent reviews, both from within the BBC and outside it! Now comes the second volume, another 50 more tracks, all banned by the BBC. George Formby's mild innuendo was often objectionable, but Louis Prima's 'Please No Squeeza De Banana' and Tom Lehrer's 'Be Prepared' stood no chance. The collection includes songs about drugs (Fats Waller's 'Reefer Man'), political incorrectness (Lonnie Donegan's 'Nobody Loves Like An Irishman'), advertising (Cliff Richard's 'High Class Baby' and The Playmates' 'Beep Beep'), and "mutilation of the classics" (such as Perry Como's 'Moonlight Love'). The shock horror-rock of John Zacherle's 'Dinner With Drac' was considered despicable, but even Billy Fury's plaintive 'My Christmas Prayer' fell foul of the censors. Part of the fun is listening without reading the booklet and trying to guess why the tracks were banned. In 1959, the Kingston Trio's 'Worried Man' was banned because the BBC didn't like the word "closet" being used for "cupboard". They'd got to stop these Americanisms coming into our language! Many of the tracks are appearing on CD for the first time. As Spencer says, "I hope no broadcaster will get into trouble for playing them as it is by no means clear that the various bans have been lifted."
